BOLSA KNOLLS, Monterey County — October 30, 2026. A new building for children who need additional behavioral and emotional support was under construction at La Joya Elementary School in Bolsa Knolls during 2026. The Santa Rita Union School District began work on its Therapeutic Intervention Program facility in April, with a projected completion near the end of the year.
What is being built?
According to an April 29 report by KSBW, the project includes four classrooms, a restroom and a parking lot. School leaders said the facility is intended to provide students with a more supportive environment for practicing coping strategies and predictable routines, with the goal of helping them return to their home schools when appropriate.
What did school officials say?
Santa Rita Union School District Superintendent Melissa Alderman explained that the program serves students whose behavioral challenges occur alongside other needs. The specialized school setting is intended to teach practical coping and social skills, rather than being treated as a permanent separation from general education for every child.
Has the facility opened?
Not verified. The April report forecast completion by the end of 2026, but California58 has not independently confirmed an opening date, staffing levels, final construction inspection or the number of children currently assigned. A groundbreaking and a projected deadline do not establish that a facility is ready for occupancy. Parents can seek current arrangements directly from their school district.
Why is this specifically Bolsa Knolls news?
The campus is located in the Bolsa Knolls area of north Salinas. It is a different local subject from California58’s prior report on Santa Rita Creek drainage and flooding in Bolsa Knolls. The school improvement is about student services, not a storm-drainage construction contract or an announced expansion in student enrollment.
